Pilot Insurance

Flying Licence Insurance

Stein Pilot Insurance specialise in arranging insurance for pilots.

Our clients range from pilots flying hang gliders to those flying the Airbus A380… and virtually every aircraft type in between. We’ve also assisted pilots involved in competition, aerobatic and display flying as well as flying instruction.

The types of insurance we arrange include:

  • Life assurance and critical illness cover
  • Income protection
  • Loss of class 1 medical insurance

The insurances we arrange typically cover you, your family, a mortgage or a business. The life assurance plans will cover you 24/7 including aviation.

We’ve been arranging insurance since 1989 and know a fair bit about your passion as our aviation protection advisor, Russ Stein, is also a private pilot.

All our policies are placed with UK based household name insurers & combined cover arranged to date exceeds £1b.

In the vast majority of cases we can secure insurance cover with no premium loadings.

Contact us if you wish to review your current arrangements or are looking to set up a new protection plan.

Flying Licence Insurance

This is probably the most important cover that an airline pilot can have. Most pilots are only too aware of how relatively insignificant health problems, which would not stop a desk-based employee working, can result in the loss of your medical.

There are two types of cover, one offering a lump sum if your Licence is lost permanently and the other one offering monthly benefits if your Licence is either suspended temporarily or permanently. You can choose either cover or a combination of the two.

For monthly benefits there is a choice of two benefit periods, 24 or 60 months, dependent on your preference/requirements. Additionally you can choose when you would like these benefits to commence (i.e. how long you have to be unfit before qualifying for payments) by selecting from the following waiting/deferment periods; 90, 180, 365 days or 18 months, which enables you to more readily match the cessation of benefits payable by your employer.

For most pilots a mix of both types of benefit will probably be the best option, using the lump sum to pay off debts such as mortgages or loans, and then use the monthly benefits to give you both short and long term cover.

You are eligible to take out cover if you are aged over 18 and under 60 years of age; under 55 years of age for lump sum cover.

If your permanent place of residence is outside of the UK, please contact us prior to applying as there are some countries where cover cannot be provided.

Trainee Pilot Insurance

We offer two policies under this insurance, one which covers you for loss of Medical and one for Life cover and you can choose either cover, or both.

For loss of Medical there are two types of cover, one a lump sum which is so that you can get recompense for the money you have paid for training if you lose your medical and cannot continue with your flying career, and a monthly benefit if you medical is suspended temporarily, and this is designed to cover monthly expenditure on loan repayments, accommodation, or living expenses in connection with your training that you are contractually committed to pay at the time of the claim. You have a choice of two benefit periods, 24 or 60 months, and you can choose how long you have to be sick before qualifying for benefit, from 90, 180, or 365 days or 18 months.

The life cover is so that you can leave money to someone who will be out of pocket on your death, or a lender.

You are eligible to take out this cover if you are aged between 18 and 55 years of age.

On successful completion of training and on obtaining a job as a commercial pilot, the cover can be converted to our standard Flying Licence Policy without further medical evidence, although this will be required if you increase the sum insured.
