I chose Westjet for my recent trip to Canada, find out what I thought of them!
- The seat
- In flight service
- Overall thoughts
Booking flights with Westjet I found to be ok, but somewhat confusing at times. However the home page is well laid out and it is easy to find flights. Like Thomas cook, I like the way that Westjet shows how much the fare will be on any given date, so if you are a bargain hunter then it will be great for you, as you will be able to see the most cheapest dates to fly.
Once dates have been selected you will then be directed to a flights page, which clearly displays all of the flight details and times, Because I was not flying direct to my final destination in Canada I had to take a connecting flight, Westjet make it very simple to booking connecting flights, all the times and layover times are clearly displayed on their website
The one thing I didn’t like booking with Westjet was the fact that I was unable to add extra items the point of booking. With the lowest fares hold baggage is not included, but to my annoyance I was unable to prepay for this, I think it would improve the customer experience to be able to add these items on at the point of booking.
Boarding at Gatwick was easy enough, Westjet boards pre boards first so wheelchair passengers and then families and then the plus cabin with the rest of the groups boarded after, Luckily I was in the plus section so I didn’t have long to wait!
At the time of booking I was sat in row 7A which was a standard economy seat, However I got a free upgrade from a friend of mine so I was sat in row 2A which is in the plus section of the aircraft. So The B767 that Westjet flies is configured for 262 seats, which includes 24 plus seats.
The plus class cabin is configured in a 2-2-2 layout.
The seats are very comfortable and well worth the extra money. One tip I have, at the time of check in westjet offers customers the opportunity to upgrade to plus class for an additional price so for my flight from London to Toronto they wanted to charge just £100 which I felt wasn’t a bad price considering you then got all the extra perks.
The seats offer a good recline as well as a foot rest which was great for my over night flight on the way home.
All the seats in plus feature a power plug and the economy class have USB ports at each seat.
Westjet doesn’t offer any seat back TVs however they have a free streaming service that can be used via the Westjet app or laptop. I was also offered a westjet tablet that was preloaded with TV shows and movies and games. I chose to stream via my iPad, this was the first time I used such a system and I actually really liked it.
It was really easy to set up, you simply had to connect to the WIFI called “westjet connect” and away you go.
The tablet the crew gave me was great though I didn’t actually use it, though I did notice that the selection of films and tv shows wasn’t as good as the streaming service.
As you can see the app is very easy to use witth just 3 options!
The entertainment section is laid out like Netflix, its really easy to navigate from, the system works really well !
I also paid $20 to have wifi for 24 hours again this worked great the whole flight, the speed was around 1MPS which is decent and well priced, the internet pass was also unlimited! Which was perfect as I had a second Westjet flight to catch after this one!
The flight service
I was really surprised with the inflight service. Being a low cost airline I wasn’t expecting much, I was already pleasantly surprised with how comfortable the seats were.
When boarding the aircraft there was an amenity kit which had flight socks, tooth brush and eye mask as well as ear plugs, for my outbound flight I didn’t use this however on my return it was very useful. You also have a pillow on the seat and on the return there was a blanket which was nice when trying to sleep.
Once sat down the crew offer you orange juice or prosecco.
There was an extensive wine and beverage menu throughout the flight, there was a great selection of food available.
The first meal was served shorty after take off, as you can see it looks very tasty.
There were plenty of snacks available throughout the flight, these included nuts, beef jerky, crisps and chocolate, the crew came round offering these items but there was also a snack basket at the front of the aircraft where you were able to pick what you wanted.
Before landing a second lighter meal was offered, again I thought this was great quality
The crew were very attentive and friendly, throughout the flight. Always had smiles and asking if you needed anything when passing in thr cabin, the crew also knew all the passengers by their names, which I thought was a lovely touch
I highly recommend Westjet I couldn’t fault them one bit. Yes their B767 are older aircraft, however they are well maintained and look fresh in the cabin, these will be replaced next year with brand new B787s, which again will offer a new level of comfort! Great value for money.
The food and drink were high quality, very comfortable seats and great in flight entertainment as well as great wifi!
The service westjet offers is great and flying in plus class is well worth the extra if you can bag a cheap upgrade at check in !
I will be using westjet again and I really hope you get the chance to fly this great airline!
