Its been a few years since I have flown on a B787 dreamliner. The last time being a Norwegian 787 when the airline was flying the 787 between Gatwick and Oslo for crew training and I was impressed by the aircraft type. So when I was researching flights to Paphos, I was rather excited when I saw that TUI were operating this aircraft to Paphos on the days that I was planning to fly on holiday.
Whilst the flights were about £80 for expensive than easyjet, Ryanair or jet2, I was willing to pay more for the comfort of a long-haul plane on a short-haul route. The aircraft that I flew on was G-TUID which is a B787-800 so the smallest 787 that TUI operate. The aircraft has its configuration changed for the short haul flights. There is no premium economy cabin like there would be on a long-haul flight.
When I originally booked the flights I paid for row 6 in the front of the cabin, which was displayed as a 2-3-2 layout but when I went to check in it had changed to 3-3-3. Boarding was painless and quick. One bonus I have found flying with TUI is they don’t seem to have any issues with Cabin baggage which does speed up the boarding process.
The crew was very friendly during the boarding process. I sat in row 6 on the way there and then row 5 on the way back. The seats are very comfortable, i was actually surprised, I would actually say that they were probably the most comfortable seats I have ever sat on a plane. The leg room was also very generous as well. As this was a long haul plane the seats also had IFE, which was also a welcome addition to the flight. The TUI IFE on this aircraft i found to be so slow and unresponsive at times which would annoy me if I was sat on a longer flight.
TUI do offer a good selection of tv shows, movies, music, and games. The seats also feature a USB port which was not working on the flight out but did, however, work on the flight home. TUI offers a Buy on board service on their short flights. They do offer a good selection of items to buy. I brought a chicken wrap which wasn’t the best, It was soggy, on the flight home I tried the ham and cheese which was good but not as good as the easyjet one! They do also sell items such as chips and mini cheeseburgers which I have not seen before!
The crew on the flights were very pleasant, the captain kept us well informed about the flight and our progress along the way! Both landings were very smooth. TUI seem to be flying the 787 on the following short-haul routes from Gatwick,
– PFO (Paphos)
– ALC (Alicante)
– DBV (Dubovnik)
– RHO (Rhodes)
– RAK (Marrakech)
– AYT (Antalya)
– SID (Espargos -Cape verde)
Overall I highly recommend the TUI Boeing 787, its very comfortable, quiet and very roomy! I when landing I felt like I had not been on a plane. If you can get a dreamliner on your short-haul flight than I would defiantly recommend paying the extra, It is worth it you wont be disappointed!
