London Southend is Londons ‘newest’ airport, located around 50 minutes from central London, the airport is actually Located in Essex in the coastal town of Southend on sea. The fast growing airport is home to airlines such as Easyjet, Flybe and Air Malta. With around 25 flights per day to over 30 destinations there is a growing variety of places you can visit from the airport.
The new terminal was built back in 2012 and since then it has been extended. I recently flew from the airport on a day trip with Flybe to Dublin. The airport itself is very small, car parks are well placed and are all within a 5 minute walk from the terminal building, I chose not to prebook parking at the airport and just parked in one of the three long stay car parks, the cost for my 24 hour period was just £20, the price has increased from when I worked there, where the on the day price was around £15.
Check in is very easy to find when you enter the terminal building, Check in was pleasant, staff were polite and very helpful and checked me in nice and quickly. I personally would like to see self service bag drop kiosks in the future, but Most people probably still like to see a human when dropping the bag and checking in.
Once I had checked in, I made my way up stairs to security, where you need to present your boarding pass. I feel that security really lets the airport down. The staff are friendly but security was so slow, they only had 2 of 4 security lanes open with 7 flights open for check in. I waited for around 15/20 minutes to pass through security. I personally think this is excessive when ive flown through Gatwick at peak times and only waited 5 minutes. After finally passing through security the departures area is small, there was only 6 boarding gates, there is a coffee shop, WH-smith, world duty free, Champagne Bar and a restaurant.
The terminal was very busy that morning. The gate was already called after I went through security. Boarding gates are very easy to find as there are only 6, boarding through gate 2. Boarding was hassle free and painless, Only one person was boarding the flight however as it wasn’t a full flight it was quick. We didnt have to wait around in the outside walk way for too long. The walk ways could do with some cleaning as there was visible rubbish and these can either be very hot in the summer or very cold in the winter. The airport dose not have any jetways so each stand has double steps.
Overall I would recommend London Southend, check in is very easy, security can catch you out at peak times so allow time for this. Growing list of destinations, the terminal shops and restaurants are good and WHsmith sells everything you would expect and also electronics too. Arriving into the airport is also quick and painless, the carparks are very close to the terminal. I will be using the airport again im sure! Give them a try next time your looking at booking a flight!
